- Hawthorne's purpose was to show the reader that sometimes things aren't what they seem.
- Brown has faith in her. He loves her much and her name suits her. She is faithful
- The pink ribbons signify faith, or cancer.
- Everything Brown witnessed was all real, a figment of his imagination, and something conjured by evil. No one else seen it, but it was there. He could not explain it, but it happened. The world will never know
- The old man really is the devil. In the story it says that the witch calls him the devil.
- The staff represent temptation. It shows you something and it lures you in. It showed Brown the truth and make him more and more interested/involved.
- If Brown had not ventured into the forest, he would have faith in his wife and townspeople, because he would have never learned that many of the people he loved, had been friends with the devil.
